What is sublimation on cushions and blankets?
Sublimation is a thermal transfer process. In sublimation on cushions, color pigments turn gaseous under heat and bond permanently with the polyester fabric. This makes the motif a fixed part of the material.
What matters here:
- The prerequisite for sublimation on cushions is a light-colored polyester cover or a polyester coating. Pure natural fibers such as cotton are not suited
- The result is brilliant and wash-resistant, entirely without a tangible print layer
- Photo motifs, logos, lettering and large-area designs are suited
It is precisely this permanent, full-area print that makes the process so attractive for home textiles: The motif stays colorfast even after frequent washing.
Printing cushions with sublimation: How the process works
Printing cushions via sublimation follows a clear sequence. After just a few runs you achieve even, reproducible results.
Step by step:
- Print the motif mirrored onto sublimation paper and place it on the polyester cushion cover
- Use the transfer press to transfer heat (approx. 180–200 °C) and pressure evenly
- Peel off the transfer paper – the motif is permanently anchored in the fabric and wash-resistant
Tip: Briefly pre-press the cushion cover to remove wrinkles. This way you avoid irregularities and achieve an even print image.
