What is DTF and how does the process work?

“Direct to Film” means that the print design is first printed mirrored onto a transfer film (DTF film). This film is then dusted with a thermoplastic hot-melt adhesive (DTF powder), which is activated (“gelled”) with the help of heat. The design is then transferred to the textile using a heat press. When the film is peeled off, the print remains on the fabric as a flexible, durable layer.

The individual process steps are identical for format printing systems and roll printing systems – however, the way they are carried out differs. While format printing requires additional devices for powder application and gelling, in roll printing systems with a fixing unit these steps are fully integrated into the automated process.
